Information and media Literacy
Competent Digital Educators incorporate learning activities, assignments and assessments which require learners to articulate information needs; to find information and resources in digital environments; to organise, process, analyse and interpret information; and to compare and critically evaluate the credibility and reliability of information and its sources.
Typical activities
To incorporate learning activities, assignments and assessments which encourage and require learners:
They articulate information needs, to search for data, information and content in digital environments, to access them and to navigate between them.
They create and update personal search strategies.
They adapt search strategies based on the quality of information found.
They analyse, compare and critically evaluate the credibility and reliability of sources of data, information and digital content.
They organise, store and retrieve data, information and content in digital environments.
They organise and process information in a structured environment.
When mastering this competence by doing the work in the lab, you should be able to say:
I encourage learners to use digital technologies for information retrieval, e.g. on assignments.
I implement learning activities in which learners use digital technologies for information retrieval.
I teach learners how to find information, how to assess its reliability, how to compare and combine information from different sources.
I use a range of different pedagogic strategies to enable learners to critically compare and meaningfully combine information from different sources.
I teach learners how to quote sources appropriately.
In the lab we will also:
Critically reflect on how suitable our pedagogic strategies are in fostering learners’ information and media literacy and adapt our strategies accordingly.
